01 / CONTEXT
The brief
Toyota and Lexus required onboarding for twelve bare domains, including toyota.com, lexus.com, and toyotacertified.com. These addresses were important entry points for customers, including traffic generated by advertising. Redirect behavior needed to be explicit and coordinated across multiple business teams.
02 / RESPONSIBILITY
What I owned
- Write the product and support documentation for the domain applications.
- Specify redirect logic, implementation options, and pre-launch and post-launch tests.
- Work directly with Toyota project management and business teams through onboarding.
03 / EXECUTION
How the work was delivered
I documented an application for each domain, covering the redirection rules and the relevant technology choices, including Varnish and OpenResty. The Section product document became the shared source of truth for the onboarding work, giving the teams a common reference for implementation and validation.
Launches were coordinated during off-peak, out-of-hours windows. The work included straightforward bare-domain redirects as well as the more complex routing associated with the wider Toyota and Lexus domain portfolio. Explicit tests on both sides of go-live kept the intended behavior visible throughout the transition.
04 / EVIDENCE
Delivery and evidence
- Onboarded all twelve domains in coordination with Toyota’s teams.
- Created product and support documentation used as the source of truth during onboarding.
- Defined launch and validation steps for public-facing domain behavior.
